Does Rice Fix Water Damaged Phones?

So, you've all heard the idea of placing your submerged device into a bag of rice to dry it out. 

Does it really work?

The concept belongs to the rice absorbing the moisture, leaving behind a fully dried out phone. After several tests done in labs, rice actually rates the least effective.

With cous cous, oatmeal and kitty-litter, among others to be better at absorption.

The fact is, as soon as water gets inside your device, the corrosion process begins. You might be lucky, that it still works, but it has nothing to do with swimming in a bag of rice.

Have a Water Damaged Phone?

What should you do?

First and foremost, turn off your device and leave it off.

Electricity mixed with water, can turn a small fix into a completely unrepairable situation.

You don't want to DRY it out, but you do need to displace the water.

Drying it out, will still leave nasty residue, so a proper clean of all internal parts, will give your device a fighting chance. Parts may need replacing and any reputable phone repairer will be able to provide this service.

All (so-called) waterproof phones and cases are still susceptible to water damage. So don't get complacent.
