Are Smartphones Really Waterproof?

Marketing & Advertising would have you believe it to be the case. 

So why do we get water damaged phones these days still?

The truth of the matter is, YES phones which are labelled 'waterproof' can actually be submerged in water and still work. But only when they are BRAND NEW. Some for up to eight hours.

So what makes a phone waterproof?

It is essentially the glue or adhesive used to create a watertight seal, around buttons, speakers and ports and anywhere that is exposed to air or water.

But over time this adhesive breaks down. And this is due to cracks and bends, dust, high heat, exposed to various chemicals, including chlorine.

After a year or two, your so-called waterproof phone will not be able to repel liquid, anywhere close to when it was brand new.

In actual fact, Samsung is being sued for misleading phone owners over their water resistant claims. Showing ads of people using their phones underwater. Then in the fine print, stating these phones against 'pool or beach use'.

What to Do

It comes down to being diligent with your phone use around water. Most phones will be unaffected with a splash of water, if cleaned off straightaway. But definitely don't run the risk of jumping in the pool with it, as the warranty will probably leave you high and dry
